Flood Insurance
The main topic of discussion at this member meeting was the future of flood insurance given by Mayor Carmen Amato, Town Planner Jim Oris and Michael Hill of the John Hill Agency. This is an important subject to you, not only for insurance purposes, but for information on protecting your homes in the event of increased water level conditions. Unfortunately, the member turnout for this meeting was disappointing.
Michael Hill – Hill Agency
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is the primary source of flood insurance coverage for residential properties in the United States managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Since Hurricane Sandy, the NFIP has been undergoing updating and changes to the flood plain maps. In addition, pending reauthorization bills have been undergoing modifications in both houses of congress. It is possible one or both bills will be finalized in the November 2019 time frame with changes that may affect insurance premium rates in the future. We will not attempt too much detail since legislation is in a state of flux as are the future maps, 3-4 years off. The revised maps will be used to designate the final base flood elevation levels and set insurance premiums. At this time, homeowners can purchase flood insurance from the NFIP or from a private insurance agency. It is very important to consider your choices by understanding the pros and cons. Be careful before leaving the NFIP for a private insurer. Talk with your insurance agent as you decide.
For consideration
-If your property is currently in a flood zone, flood insurance will be required by your mortgage lender and is mandatory.
-Purchase of flood insurance currently, will “grandfather you.” This means, when new rates are established, your premiums will be phased in over a 4-year period for primary owners and over a 3-year period for secondary owners.
Mayor Amato / Jim Oris (CRS Community Rating System)
FEMA offers the program to communities that are exposed to high water level conditions or flood plains. The program is the chief way in which the CRS mitigates losses by providing incentives (i.e., premium discounts) for communities to extend beyond the minimum floodplain management requirements by developing extra measures to provide protection from flooding. For a community to qualify for the CRS, it must be in full compliance with all aspects of the NFIP.
The CRS makes our waterfront properties more resilient against storms and tidal damage. Your Mayor along with the Town Council has achieved a rating of 6, providing for a 20% discount when purchasing flood insurance. Mention this to your insurance agent. The township government will continue to take advantage of the CRS program to achieve higher discounts.
More on this subject in the future as processes are developed.
Important Notice: This notice pertains to all boaters using the Sloop Creek Channel.
Tentative dredging of the Sloop Creek Channel will commence this weekend, starting Friday, November 15, 2019. The project will consist of dredging equipment and dredge transport barges. While the transport barges are being loaded, passing is not recommended. When passing, notify the dredge operator on VHF Channel 67. The contractor will let you know the best side to pass on in the moment. Channel users should notify the dredge operators BEFORE they pass, not as they pass!
Food Drive/ PBA Toy Drive
A special thanks to several members of the board for participating in The BSHCA Food Drive & the PBA Toy Drive on Saturday, November 2, 2019. Gary Dinallo, event chairperson, has run the food drive successfully in the past and we thank him for his time and effort in this endeavor. He was joined by John Schnitzer and Chuck Crunkelton who assisted him in this important community endeavor. A special thanks to Chuck for volunteering to chair the food drive next year. Beth Collis had coordinated the toy drive between Berkeley PBA and BSHCA and did an outstanding job. A word of thanks to these members who give their time and efforts tirelessly for the good of our community. Just a quick line to recognize that all board members should be commended in their dedication to this association and the Berkeley Shores community
Gary reports that we donated 41 bags of food to the St. Barnabas Food Pantry to be used to make up food baskets for those in need on Thanksgiving Day. The PBA toy drive received 6 bags of toys. I would like to thank our friends and neighbors from Berkeley Shores for being so generous.
Local Support / Donations
BSHCA continues to support programs held by the township as part of their civic participation. We donated a $50 gift certificate as a prize to be won at the annual Halloween Trunk or Treat program conducted by the Berkeley Twp. recreation Dept.
We also purchased a scarecrow in support of the Potter School Halloween program.
Recreation – Dudley Park
Wanna take a nice walk in the woods? Try the path at Dudley Park, just off Rt9 south and the last right turn before Lanoka Harbor. Take the wooded pathway to the Trestle that spans the Cedar Creek and separates Berkeley Twp. from Lacey Twp. Take a picnic lunch. There are table and benches. Enjoy the quiet. The old wooden trestle was replaced by the county and dedicated on Saturday, October 26 by the county and local officials. We thank the county Freeholders for their continued support of county park recreational facilities.

Dear Members,
We are once again at the end of a great summer season in Berkeley shores. Time to enjoy the cooler Autumn weather with temperatures comfortable enough to continue our boating season into October before we buckle down for winter. Boats will be coming out and stored. The snowbirds will be getting ready for Florida and warmer climates. This newsletter will address upcoming events and issues.
Veeder Lane
Certainly, all have experienced the roadway disturbance on Veeder Lane due to the installation of the pipeline and the construction requirements for improvements to the quality of our water system. Thank you all for your patience during this time. However, the outcome certainly was in our favor. The recent scraping and repaving of Veeder Lane is a much welcome improvement to the neighborhood, clearing up not only recent, but rough and bumpy roadway sections from past disturbances. A thank you is in order to Mayor Amato, the Ocean County Freeholders and the county roadway dept for their prompt attention resulting in a job well done in such a timely manner.
Member Meeting
Our next member meeting is scheduled for Friday, November 1, 2019, 7PM at the Berkeley Township Recreation Center located on Route 9, Bayville. The main topic of discussion will be the current status of flood insurance presented by the John Hill Agency and the current legislation under consideration by the congress, presented by Mayor Carmen Amato.
Local Support / Donations
BSHCA continues to support programs held by the township as part of their civic participation.
Donated a $50 gift certificate as a prize to be won at the annual Halloween Trunk or Treat program conducted by the Berkeley Twp. Recreation Department.
Purchased a scarecrow for the Potter School Halloween program.
Food Drive
Our annual food drive will take place on Saturday, November 2, 2019. Food items will be picked up at the Potter School on Veeder Lane from 9am-12pm. Please be as generous as you have been in the past. All food donations will be delivered to St. Barnabas Parish for the preparation of food baskets to be delivered to needy families during Thanksgiving.
PBA #237 Toy Drive
At the same time, we will be accepting toys for the annual Bayville PBA #237 Toy Drive. Pick up point is the H&M Potter School.
Representatives from the Police Dept. will be available accept your donations.
Hope to see all at the November 1st meeting.
John Sowakinas, President, BSHCA

Dear Members,
A copy of the letter (click here to download) advises us that the repaving of Veeder Lane will commence on Wednesday, October 2, 2019.
The project will cover Ocean Gate Drive to Bayview Ave and will take several days.
We are appreciative of the effort put forth by the county in such a timely manner.
Finally, that rough piece of roadway in front of the pumping station will also be corrected.
While we may be inconvenienced for a short period of time due to rerouting, we will enjoy a smooth roadway once again.
Important; The letter references parking arrangements. That instruction pertains only to anyone who parks on Veeder lane, not individual driveways.

Letter from the President
Greetings to Residents of Berkeley Shores,
Well, another summer has come and gone, but in this past year BSHCA has again proven the value of its existence. We are pleased to report a large attendance and higher than normal participation on the water at the annual Memorial Day Commemoration to current Veterans and to those who have passed, the Blessing of the Fleet and our traditional Beach Picnic Barbeque. The dedication and generosity of your association was evident to the community. Much appreciation to the volunteers and Board members who so unselfishly gave of their time, talents and effort to make this, and other functions such a resounding success.
The Garage Sale, as usual, was a tremendous success due to the efforts of Board Director Gary Dinallo, assisted by his wife, Ellen in conjunction with the “Team Trevor Toy Drive” Thank you members, for your generosity.
On Saturday, August 24th, your BSHCA Board assisted in the dedication of the heretofore Amherst Recreation site renaming of Clifford Wright Beach, Mastapeter Park and the Kimerlee Maison Playground. The ceremony culminated in the dedication of the flagpole and stone marker dedicated by BSHCA in memory of our Fallen Heroes. Kudos to our Treasurer, John Schnitzer, for his attention to the preparation and completion of the site for dedication on short notice.
The Inlet was again dredged for a safe boating summer and to provide adequate passage for our large boating community. The dredging was completed in June using a longer and more effective piece of machinery, evidenced by the more open inlet mouth. The “sand spit” did not encroach into the main inlet for the first time in several years of dredging. Also, we greatly appreciate your observance of the boating rules, especially your wake speeds when leaving and entering our main inlet. Jet skis; please be more attentive, especially when navigating the channel.
The 4th annual BSHCA Golf Tournament was again a monumental success due to the excellent leadership of former board member, Ken Gerb, assisted by his volunteer group of members. The tournament consisted of 24 foursomes comprised of 96 golfers. More than $3000 dollars in prizes were won with a profit of $3500. Photos are available in our online gallery!
The “End of Summer” party held on Sept. 6th at the Captains Inn in Lacey Twp., was a social success due to the efforts of our Social Director, Jerry Coppola and his wife JoAnn, whose dedication to the social needs of the community are unmatched. Much thanks to both.
I have received many inquiries and concerns about the community in the past season. We, as a board, collectively have either resolved or directed inquiries to the proper authorities for review
As all have noticed, the recent utility work on Veeder Lane has left the road in less than favorable condition. Construction is still on-going, and this inconvenience is expected to continue until all work is completed, at which time we will inquire as to planning for the restoration of the roadway. All must understand that Veeder Lane is a county road and not under the purveyance of the township. John Schnitzer has brought to the attention of the board, what appears to be several sinkholes on the center island due to the excavation. This could be a safety concern for anyone stepping foot on the island. Please do so with caution. This condition will also be considered for attention at the appropriate time.
My special thanks to all my Board members, Beth Collis my 1st V.P, Bob Nunn, my 2nd V.P who is our code enforcement liaison. John Schnitzer our treasurer who puts in countless hours keeping our financials in order and Marion McGrath who assists John with the financials. Lucille Pavolic, our Secretary who makes sense of our discussions and puts them in readable order. To Chuck Crunkleton our environmental and military liaison. To Dave Atkins and Phil Antoine our by-laws committee head and Donna Lagos, membership chairperson who brings her business experience to our group to keep membership up to date and active. Donna continually works to expand the membership. To all our volunteers who dedicate themselves to the advancement of the Berkeley Shores community. I feel honored to name them all, but the list would not be complete without a special thanks to Nancy Wieme, who attends all of our meetings as a guest and is responsible for our web site and all the photos taken throughout the year, commemorating our BSHCA events. And to Jim Benn, who chairs our scholarship committee, an important part of our service to the community. And last, much appreciation to former Berkeley Shores resident, Gary Dinallo, who made a commitment to remain on the board until his duties, Garage Sale and Food Drive, can be handled by a member volunteer who, incidentally, does not require a position on the board.
In conclusion, I would like all to remember that BSHCA is a non-profit organization that operates behind the scenes and does not receive nor require the accolades other groups may receive, but we are an ever-evolving association that grows and recognizes the needs of the community. This can only be accomplished by membership in our organization so please join our BSHCA family. Your membership will help the community so please get involved. We are looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank You,
John Sowakinas
President BSHCA

August 27, 2019
Dear Members,
On Saturday, August 24, BSHCA took part assisting Mayor Carmen Amato and township officials in the dedication of our Amherst Beach recreation site. It was a special day attended by residents of Berkeley Shores and Berkeley Township. So many members were present to represent us and show support for our association and to show appreciation to the township for our Beach/Park complex. A special thank you to our Parks Department for their attention to the grounds and to our Fire Department for their display of our American flag.
Four dedication ceremonies were presented, starting at 9AM.
The first was the dedication of the Amherst Beach, heretofore named the Clifford B. Wright Beach at Amherst. A decorative and impressive sign was placed at center beach and unveiled. Several members of his family were present, including his wife and sons. They addressed the audience in appreciation of the honor bestowed upon their loved one. Mayor Amato presented to the family, a proclamation which detailed the contributions Clifford B. Wright made to the township spanning 60 years.
The second dedication moved the audience to the front of the old Mastapeter property, located at the inlet entrance, to be named Mastapeter Park in honor of the Mastapeter family. A proclamation was read by Mayor Amato, acknowledging their generosity in the purchase agreement of the property and presented to the family. Anthony Mastapeter addressed the audience on behalf of the family in appreciation for the naming of the park.
After the unveiling of the sign, the audience moved to:
The third dedication site, the naming of the playground to be Angel Playground in Memory of Kimerlee Maison. The recently installed play gym replaced the playground equipment from the beach area, destroyed by hurricane Sandy. That equipment was funded years ago through $30,000 in private donations and dedicated to Kimerlee, who died in an automobile accident in 2004. She was a much-loved educator in the Berkeley School system. A proclamation, in remembrance of Kimerlee Maison was read by Mayor Amato and will be presented to the family.
The last and fourth ceremony would be the flagpole in Commemoration of our Military, dedicated by BSHCA. We funded the flagpole, plaque and landscape platform as our contribution to the park in honor of our fallen military. Our president, John Sowakinas, addressed the audience. He applauded the township for the purchase of the Mastapeter property, making it possible to expand and develop the park into what we see here today.
John thanked board member, John Schnitzer, for the erection of the flagpole and preparation of the site for dedication.
Our 1st Ward Councilman, James Byrnes, Vietnam Vet, Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient would do the honors of dedicating the flagpole. Some excerpts from his speech as follows:
This dedication ceremony is a time to set apart a special spot in order to honor and memorialize those veterans who served our country in war time and who currently serve to protect the nation. Our liberties and values stand safe today because of the brave men and women who have been ready to face the fire. From time to time when you visit this park, pause for a moment and think of what this simple site represents. Countless men and women died in defense of those stars and stripes, affording us the liberties we are privileged to enjoy and so often take for granted. Ask God’s protection on all of those serving our country in all parts of the world.
Navy veterans and BSHCA members, Bob Gale and Sandy Perc next raised our flag in commemoration of the fallen. As the flag was raised the National Anthem was played, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Our program and the dedication ceremony ended with God Bless America.
All were thanked for their participation on this special day.
Special thanks to Mayor Carmen Amato, Council members, BSHCA members, John Sowakinas, John Schnitzer, Nancy Wieme, Bob Gale and Sandy Perc for their participation.
Pictures taken by our web site coordinator, Nancy Wieme, can be seen on our website gallery.

Dear Members,
The BSHCA Executive Board met on Friday, July 19, 2019, at the Berkeley Township Recreation Center. In my last newsletter, we placed emphasis on summer activities on the Berkeley Shores waterfront and will continue to do so as we enjoy the summer months. Hopefully, the recent heatwave will be a one-time summer event for this year and more reasonable summer temperatures will prevail for the remainder. Of importance at this meeting, was a discussion of the proposed legislation in Washington that will impact our flood insurance rates. Our thanks to Bill McGrath, Chairman of the Township Waterways Advisory Commission, for his attendance at the meeting, providing information and background to this subject.
Flood Insurance Legislation - We continue to gather information on this subject. Presently, the legislation proposes rates to be increased at 18% per year over a 4-year period for permanent residents and at 25% per year for owners of second homes over a 3-year period. NJ Senator Menendez has proposed legislation that will reduce the proposed rates by half and will be presented when the Senate considers the bill. We will share more on this subject as we gather additional information to present at a future member meeting.
Fireworks – Most fireworks complaints occur during the July 4th holiday. We received one complaint. The State of NJ law can be reviewed in our last newsletter. Police can only respond and cannot issue a summons if they do not witness the violation. Our only recourse to this annoyance is to call the police dept. when the ordinance is violated.
Boating Safety – Over this past weekend, a board member took some time to observe activity at the main lagoon. With few exceptions, the rules were observed regarding wake speeds upon exiting and entering the main lagoon at Amherst. We thank our residents for their attention to proper and safe boat handling. Annual dredging is expensive and your attention to the proper observance of the rules will assure good passage through our lagoons and channel through the boating season.
Clinging Jellyfish – We did not receive any reports of jellyfish incidents, but it does not mean an incident did not occur. We advise you to refer to the last newsletter and store the necessary items on your boat in the event it becomes necessary to treat a jellyfish sting.
Speeding on Bayview Ave. and Veeder Lane – This issue has been brought to our attention on several occasions by members. Both roads are patrolled by our local police, but limited resources cannot provide 24-hour surveillance. At our request to Freeholder Vicari, the county engineer has placed the matter on his agenda for consideration of blinking speed limit signs. He has requested that we observe a 2-month investigation period before requesting a progress report. We will keep you informed of progress on this important matter.

Membership – Donna Lagos
Donna reports that 75% of dues have been collected for the 2019-2020 cycle. If you have not returned your dues remittance, please do so at your earliest convenience. Donna has put together a program of recruitment and it would be helpful if all dues were collected on time, giving her the opportunity to devote her efforts to building the organization. The BSHCA brochure has been updated and can be viewed on our web site, berkeleyshores.org. Click here for the Membership Page. For the new FULL brochure, please click here.
BSHCA has served this waterfront community for 34 years. The list of benefits derived since its inception is long and impressive. Imagine the increase in our membership roster if each member family recruited just one non-member family into BSHCA. Our membership would double overnight. Think about it.
Treasurer – John Schnitzer
John is preparing the proper material for the annual audit. He will also work on a 2019-2020 budget with new board member, Marion McGrath, to be presented at the next meeting. Due to his personal schedule, he can no longer attend to the maintenance of the center island. He proposed a budget for professional care of our center island to be considered by the board.

Presidents Corner
Dear Members,
We are moving along in the new BSHCA administration and our board is settling in nicely, with attention to planning, routine housekeeping and responsibilities. As we enter the summer and most active period, we will focus on neighborhood and water issues that are most relevant to you as well as reminding you of upcoming BSHCA events. Timely issues have crossed my desk, some internal and some brought to my attention by member response.
Fireworks – The 4th of July holiday is fast approaching and with it comes the subject of fireworks. While some fireworks have been made legal in New Jersey, the exploding of airborne fireworks is still illegal. The N.J. Explosives and Fireworks Act was amended in 2017 to allow anyone 16 or older to purchase, possess and use "certain sparkling devices and novelties," according to a breakdown of the law provided by the state Division of Consumer Affairs.
These "permissible fireworks" are limited to hand-held or ground based sparklers, snakes, and glow worms; smoke devices; and trick noisemakers, including party poppers, snappers, and drop pops, according to consumer affairs. All others require a valid permit.
Too often the law is ignored by residents and in many cases, visitors to our neighborhood, and airborne fireworks are set off in the lagoons settling on roof tops and boats. Along the Allen Road beach, they are aimed towards homes, especially Steerage Way. Numerous complaints to police result. Police can only respond. They cannot issue a summons if they do not witness the violation. Our only recourse to this annoyance is to call the police department when the ordinance is violated. If you see something, say something.
Boating Safety – Most boat owners are aware of and respect the rules of our waterways, especially the no wake areas in the lagoons, leading out to the bay. Of importance is boat speed in the interior lagoons, at the mouth of the main lagoon and observance of the no wake buoys leading into the bay. For both pleasure boats and jet skis, please observe the rules. Be mindful of your boat speed. Jet skis should not be making sharp turns under sudden acceleration in the main lagoon and in the channel. Boats should not jump on plane entering the bay from the mouth of the main lagoon nor should they stay on plane into the mouth on their way in. That would seem obvious to any responsible handler of a watercraft, but unfortunately there are those who think the rules do not apply to them. Annual dredging is expensive and your attention to proper observance of the rules will assure good passage through our lagoons and channel through the boating season.
Clinging Jelly Fish – It has been verified that the clinging jelly fish is present in the area just south of Tices Shoal and possibly in the very popular area where watercraft gather, especially on weekends. Be aware of grassy areas. Officials say anyone stung by the jellyfish, which can produce severe pain, muscle cramping, and other localized symptoms, should immediately treat the impacted area. It might be wise to stock the following on your boat.
- Apply white vinegar to the affected area to immobilize any remaining stinging cells.
- Rinse the area with salt-water and remove any remaining tentacle materials using gloves or a thick towel.
- A hot compress or cold pack can then be applied to alleviate pain.
- If symptoms persist or pain increases instead of subsiding, seek prompt medical attention.
Danger Area – The area just past the main inlet and to the right, past the retention groin leading into the Allen Road Beach should be avoided by boats and especially jet skis. Old concrete slabs and rebar exist just below the surface and can severely damage watercraft if struck and can result in bodily injury to jet skiers. The Waterways Commission has been working with the township Public Works Department to erect signs warning of the danger. The signs were designed by the Public Works Department and were put in place on Friday, June 28. Thank you to 2nd VP Bob Nunn and to Steve Seiler, Public Works.
Speeding on Bayview Ave. and Veeder Lane – This issue has been brought to our attention on several occasions by members. Both roads are patrolled by our local police, but limited resources cannot provide 24-hour surveillance. Past President Fred Bekiarian recently spoke with Freeholder Joseph Vicari, requesting a study of both roadways, with the intention of placing blinking speed limit signs at appropriate locations designed to slow down drivers who do not observe the local speed limits. In response, we received a letter dated June 25, 2019 from the office of the County Engineer, John Ernst, advising us of a plan to study the issue. The matter has been placed on their list with a tracking number for follow up purposes. The county engineer has requested that we observe a two month investigation period before requesting a progress report. We will keep you informed of progress on this important matter.

Dear Member,
The 1st executive board meeting after the June 1st annual meeting was held on Friday, June 14. In attendance were 12 members. An extensive agenda was presented by new board president, John Sowakinas as follows;
Treasurer – John Schnitzer reported a balance of $19,175. A committee was organized to prepare a budget for the 2019-2020 fiscal year for presentation at the next board meeting. John will also prepare all records for the annual audit, comparing all expenditures and receipts to outlays. John will continue in the position of Treasurer and in addition, has been handling the responsibilities of the bulletin and center island maintenance. Due to his busy personal schedule, he can no longer handle the island maintenance, but will continue with flag replacements, bulletin board messages and his decorative displays for special holidays. Discussion ensued and consideration will be given to private contracting of island beautification. John will assist a committee.
Secretary – Lucille Pavolic will continue in this position. Minutes of the last meeting were presented, unread, and approved by the board.
Membership – New director, Donna Lagos, accepting the responsibility of Membership Chair from retiring board member, Ken Gerb, reported the 2019-2020 dues renewal cycle material has been completed and mailed to members at the beginning of the week. Returns are already coming in and Donna is appreciative of your timely response. She discussed plans for increasing membership by contacting past members who have lapsed and new residents, replacing those who have moved. Donna is also developing a marketing plan for future recruitment of new members. Prompt mailing of your dues will greatly reduce the time spent on reminder notices, giving her time to develop new actions and procedures for recruiting of new members. A committee of Donna, Bob and Nancy was formed to review and update the BSHCA brochure for printing and for recruitment purposes.
2nd VP – Long time board member Bob Nunn reported on code enforcement. Bob continues to refer code violations brought to his attention by the membership and for those that he personally observes. Several were cited for unsightly homes, projects lacking permits, failing bulkheads and more. Bob also handles the most frequently consulted real estate section of our web site. He also handles paid ads for the web site and would like to see a member step up to handling this revenue producing program. See above for member contact. Bob also handles the annual Atlantic City Boat Trip for the weekend of July 12-14. Click here for details.
Garage Sale – Director, Gary Dinallo reported 35 members participated in the recent Garage Sale on Saturday, June 8th. Approximately 100 maps and item lists were handed out to visitors. The June date seems to be preferred by members, guiding the board to setting the date for June 2020. BSHCA realized a profit of $475 to our treasury, after expenses. This year's Food Drive is set for the first Saturday in November. All proceeds will be delivered to St. Barnabas Parish Food Pantry in time for the preparation of Thanksgiving baskets for those in need.
1st VP – Newly elected 1st VP, Beth Collis, reported on the success of BSHCA support of the Christmas in July Toy Drive, started by the Kwatkoski family of Bayville. Their young son Trevor is a cancer survivor. A toy gathering box was placed at the Potter School to coincide with the Garage Sale. The family of Trevor sent a card to BSHCA, thanking all in Berkeley Shores who responded so generously with donations of money and toys. The joining of the Toy Drive with our Garage Sale was proposed by Beth in a very short time frame and we thank her for her effort in making it a success.
Social Events – Long-time Director, Jerry Coppola, reported on the success of our annual beach picnic. Many favorable comments from members and guests. We are a civic organization and this event gives back to the community. It has become a major event for the township with our officials participating, extending beyond the boundaries of Berkeley Shores, a positive event for our association, generating much good will.
Next on the list of social events is our annual and again, very successful, “End of Summer Dance Party” to be held on Friday, September 6th at the Captains Inn, Lacey Township. Please set aside the date for this fun night with a Hawaiian theme. Details and costs to follow at which time Jerry requests monies be sent in as soon as possible upon your decision to attend.
And last. A bus trip is planned for the Christmas Show, December 3, 2019 at the Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster county, PA. Cost for Bus, Show and Dinner. $125 per person. Please contact Jerry at info@berkeleyshores.org
Web Site – Our web site coordinator, Nancy Wieme, can be considered a quasi-member of the board. She gives us outstanding support, suggestions and recommendations, always there to assist in any way that she can. Nancy will be working with board members to search out new technology that will enhance our ability to communicate with you in the future, including the possibility of remote voting. Our focus will be to make board positions more attractive and easier to maintain, encouraging members to take part in the running of the organization in the future.
By Laws – A committee will convene for the purpose of simplifying our by-laws. President John Sowakinas will participate and ready a proposal for a future BSHCA board meeting. Once the board is satisfied with revisions, the package will be presented to the membership at a general meeting for adoption and/or comment.
Meeting Schedule – A meeting schedule was developed for board meetings to take place on the 3rd Friday of the month through December. A general member meeting is scheduled for Friday, October 18, 7PM at the Recreation Center, Rt9. We will seek out a guest speaker with relevance to our Berkeley Shores concerns. If you have ideas, please let us know. A second general meeting will be held in the spring. Additional member meetings may be scheduled as the need arises.
BSHCA Golf Tournament – The BSHCA Golf Tournament scheduled for September 19 is filling up fast. Please submit your foursomes as soon as you can to ensure a spot in the tournament. Click here for all information concerning the tournament.
Past President – Fred Bekiarian is not an official member of the board but will remain as an invited member to assist in whatever capacity is needed until such time as his attendance is no longer necessary. His primary responsibilities will be supporting the new president, assisting in the preparation of the newsletter with Director Phil Antoine and overseeing the Veterans Commemoration Ceremony on the Memorial Day weekend.

Dear Members,
Just a few months ago we issued a letter to our membership warning of “storm clouds” ahead for BSHCA that might threaten its continuing existence. Complacency, malaise, a board in place for too long, lack of motivation, a lack of new ideas and changing neighborhood demographics were contributing factors. Consequently, we held a special member meeting for the purpose of listening, member input and generating renewed interest in the association outside of the executive board. The response was positive and very encouraging, gaining candidates for the position of president, 1st vice president and three new directors. In addition, many members at that meeting volunteered to assist board members in carrying out their duties. It was a turning point and we have not looked back since. A very successful and well attended Memorial Day weekend consisting of our Boat Blessing / Commemoration Ceremony / Beach Picnic gave an additional boost to a growing confidence in the association and the nominees. So much positive energy culminated in a very well attended Annual Member meeting on Saturday, June 1, 2019. For photos, click here
Of course, the highlight of our agenda was the election of the new 12-member board, consisting of 5 Officers and 7 Directors.
Officers
President: John Sowakinas, comes to us with fine credentials, having served in leadership capacities in several organizations, like BSHCA. John has already stepped into the position, presiding over most of the meeting immediately following his installation by the membership. John is a retired police officer from Ringwood, NJ.
His comments; My wife and I decided to join BSHCA because of the good work they provide to this unique waterfront community. The Memorial Day boat parade and picnic are a positive example of what this organization does for members. A major benefit for members is the excellent relationship BSHCA has with Berkeley Township. Along with the board, John looks forward to a very productive year.
1st Vice President; Beth Collis, fills this previously vacant spot with a commitment to move into the presidency as the future dictates, providing stability to this essential position. Beth also serves as 2nd VP to the Potter School PTA and holds a position on the Township Waterways Advisory Commission.
Her comments; Beth plans to work with the board by introducing new topics, increase membership and encourage member involvement.
2nd Vice President;Bob Nunn, long time board member, will continues an active board member lending experience, continuity and support to both Beth and John. Bob also holds a position on the Waterways Advisory Commission. During the meeting, Bob participated with John in presenting the agenda.
Treasurer; John Schnitzer, our current Treasurer, will continue in this position. John was on vacation and could not be present for this meeting. Bob Nunn presented the treasury report at $18,749.95 after withdrawal for three $1000 scholarships.
Secretary; Lucille Pavolic, Long time board member, will continue in the position of Secretary.
Directors
The director body will also undergo some assignment changes to accommodate the new members.
Ken Gerb, long-time board member, will not be returning to the board under the new administration. Much thanks to Ken for his excellent management of our membership rolls over the past several years, growing us to 700 in the 2017-2018 renewal cycle. Ken also took responsibility for the major design of our center island several years ago. He proposed the idea of a BSHCA Golf Tournament to the board in 2016, a highly successful fundraiser enabling us to increase our scholarship awards. Ken will chair the tournament as a non-board member. The event is scheduled for September 19, 2019. Good luck to Ken in semi-retirement.
Current Directors, Phil Antoine, Jerry Coppola, Charles Crunkleton and Gary Dinallo will remain, and most will retain their current responsibilities. New Directors, Dave Atkins and Marion McGrath are currently unassigned.
Dave plans on being an active member of the board and will work in any capacity where needed. Marion returns to the board after a long absence.
New Director, Donna Lagos, has accepted the responsibility of Membership Chairperson.
She has been working with Ken Gerb to learn the program requirements and is ready for the renewal mailing to take place over the next few weeks. You can make it easy for her by sending in your dues payments promptly. Donna comes to the board with business experience in sales and marketing that will assist in promoting ideas to increase membership. She reported current membership status at 627 members in 339 households and 10 new potential members and renewals from the beach picnic on Sunday.
The executive board will have much to report after the reorganization meeting on June 14.
The rest of the meeting consisted of board reports, presentations and guest speakers.
BSHCA Good Citizenship Award
The award was presented by Bob Nunn to member Jason Kangas.
Jason brought to the attention of Berkeley Township, the very serious issue regarding the quality of water delivered to our town by AQUA America. Due to his initiative, construction is underway for three new iron removal water treatment facilities in Bayville. This project addresses high levels of iron, aluminum and radionuclides. Reliable and safe drinking water should be delivered to Bayville when construction is completed. It is expected the system should be up and running by fall of 2019.
Presentation of BSHCA Scholarships
Presentation of 2019 scholarship awards were made by Carol Rusnak of the BSHCA Scholarship Committee. -Bettina Bonfiglio, granddaughter of Doreen Lanza, BSHCA member.
-Mikayla Demarco, granddaughter of Richard and Gail Hess, BSHCA members.
-Gabrielle Quinones, daughter of Jay and Stephanie Quinones, BSHCA members.
Christmas in July Toy Drive
1st VP Beth Collis introduced Jill, Tom and Trevor Kwatkoski, sponsors of the Christmas in July Toy Drive. Jill spoke to members regarding the drive, which benefits the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Team Trevor sponsors this non-profit organization. Children receiving treatment at RWJ pick a special gift in recognition of their strength and courage from a “treasure box.” During the summer months, the treasure boxes get depleted and Team Trevor would like to have them overflowing with toys for all ages, infants to teenagers. Any monetary or new toy donation to this worthy cause is greatly appreciated. All money donated is used to buy toys for the children. A toy box will be available at the H&M Potter School on Saturday, June 8 during the Garage Sale.
Note: Young Trevor Kwatkoski is a cancer survivor.

Guest Speakers
1st Ward Councilman James Byrnes
Councilman James Byrnes filled in for Mayor Amato who was detained at the last minute. He covered several subjects starting with attention to the Allen Road beach concerning concrete and rebar close to the surface. New members and residents may not be aware since this condition occurred many years ago. Bill McGrath, chairman of our Waterways Commission added that it will be addressed with perimeter markers to warn of the danger area.
-A new swimming pool is scheduled for installation at Martell’s Waters Edge on Bayview Ave.
-The township has partnered with the Ring APP. The Ring App is a security monitoring device that interacts with your cell phone, alerting you to movement around your home.
-Some new and relatively new business in town: C&C Breakfast and Lunch, MJ’s at the old Cove location, and M&M Seafood.
-Last was a continuing issue regarding the state school budgeting formula. Councilman Byrnes pointed to the serious inequities between funding for the Abbott districts vs funding for the non-Abbot districts. These budget disparities impose a major impact on our local property taxes.
Councilman Byrnes is a disabled Vietnam Veteran who continuously speaks out on matters concerning veterans and participates in our annual Commemoration Ceremony to military, placing the wreath upon the waters.
Deputy Chief Kevin Santucci representing Police Chief Karin Dimichele.
Deputy Chief Santucci covered many topics and was available afterward for a question and answer session from members. Among the many issues presented:
• Ring security program to reduce crime.
• Traffic issues in town - speeding.
• Beach issues and increased police presence as officer resources are available.
• Waterways speeding problems.
• Residents with special needs can notify police department.
• Tip line available to residents - Anonymous calls acceptable.
Question and answer session
• Traffic and speeding on Bayview Avenue. Possibility of a flashing speed limit sign.
• H&M Potter School – Veeder Lane flashing speed limit light suggested by member.
• Drug issues at all Bayville parks - Need of more police presence.
• Amherst beach children’s playground safety issues. Bulkhead fencing.
• Buoy problem in middle of channel - Need to move to side.
• Fireworks issues - Residents should call police department.
Proclamation from Mayor Amato to BSHCA
Mayor Carmen F. Amato, Jr. proclaimed Memorial Day May 27, 2019, as a day of prayer for permanent peace and a day to remember the
souls of the warriors we have lost, and to thank and honor those who are fighting for us today. Memorial Day is also a day to honor
our veterans and those brave service men and women fighting for our freedom. Memorial Day is a day to remember the anniversary
of D-Day. Memorial Day is a day to remember those brave soldiers who stormed ashore on June 6, 1944. Our nation endures and thrives
because of the devotion of our men and women in uniform who
from generation to generation carry a burden heavier than any
we may ever know.
BSHCA held their 24th annual boat parade Blessing of the Fleet and Memorial Day Commemoration by placing a wreath upon the waters in honor of all our service men and women.
Presentation of Plaque to Past President, Fred Bekiarian
2nd VP Bob Nunn presented a lifetime recognition award plaque to Fred Bekiarian. This award is well deserved as Fred has worked endlessly and tirelessly for many years for the welfare of BSHCA. The plaque reads:
Berkeley Shores Homeowners’ Civic Association 2019 lifetime recognition presented to Fred Bekiarian in appreciation for your service above and beyond the call of duty as our past president. Thank you for your continuous dedication to the growth and welfare of the association.
Fred thanked members and stated that belonging to BSHCA has been a very rewarding experience. He plans on offering help in any way he can when needed. Fred is also confident that newly elected President, John Sowakinas is very well qualified for this position as are all the new board members.
Garage Sale
Our Annual Garage Sale is on schedule for Saturday, June 8. Director, Gary DiNallo will handle all applications.
Mayor's Annual Golf Tournament
BSHCA will participate in the Mayor's Golf Tournament at Cedar Creek Golf Course, set for Thursday, June 6, 2019, 8AM “Shotgun Start.” This annual event raises money for the Summer Concert Series held in Veterans Park. The winners of the foursome purchased by BSHCA are members Dick Andrews, Jim Benn, Ken Gerb and Sandy Perc. Good Luck to all and make BSHCA proud with a first-place win.

Dear Members,
Our Annual Beach Picnic, open to all, has been a mainstay event of the association for the past 9 years. A successful turnout resulted in the boards adoption of the event to occur simultaneously with the Boat Blessing/Veterans Commemoration Ceremony, started 24 years ago. Both comprise our most ambitious undertaking in our annual events calendar.
Our beach picnic deserves special mention. The event is a major undertaking chaired by BSHCA Director, Jerry Coppola and his wife JoAnn. It requires much planning, negotiation with vendors, many association volunteers and coordination/partnering with township officials and workers. Food deliveries from Shop-Rite. Delivery and assembly of the tents, grill and hot dog wagon from Richard's Rental. Delivery of benches, trash cans and relief stations from the Township Parks Dept. And it all comes together with a host of volunteers who do the cooking, serving, cleaning and recruiting of new members, which this year garnered 12 additions.
So why a special mention? This year seemed different from previous years. There was an excitement in the air. The attendance was larger. So many positive comments of approval and surprise by new people gave JoAnn a lift and a recognition that their hard work was appreciated, and the event was an enjoyable experience. Add that to the fact that many volunteers were new or relatively new to Berkeley Shores. That new blood we asked for just a few months ago seems to have arrived and positioned to assure stability for the future. The enjoyment of this event by our local dignitaries should not be overlooked. It gives them a feeling of community and it exemplifies BSHCA as a true civic organization with relevancy that reaches beyond the borders of Berkeley Shores.
We hope that all who are able, will attend the annual meeting this Saturday, June 1, 9AM at the Recreation Center, Rt 9. Voting will take place for the new board and your attendance will show support for the new board members and especially for the new president.

Message from the Executive Board
Dear Berkeley Shores Members,
In our last newsletter to you, dated April 14, 2019, we updated you on progress made towards structural changes to board operations. Most encouraging were the members who volunteered their time and efforts to assure the organization would be on a safe footing for the future. You were also informed that member, John Sowakinas, entered his name in nomination for the position of president, to be voted on at the June annual meeting. A special follow up meeting was held on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 to assist John in becoming more familiar with the organization and to develop ideas for moving forward after the June annual meeting.
Most of the current board will remain to conduct the business of the association. Our list of new nominees has narrowed to 3 and that will result in a fully staffed board. As previously mentioned, we do have a generous list of volunteers to manage the many events adopted by the association over the years. More reliance will be placed on the volunteer member to conduct association business in the future. Closely following the Annual Meeting, a meeting will be scheduled to reorganize and plan out future board operations and assign responsibilities. We will have much more to report at a future member meeting as our planning materializes.
BSHCA Annual Meeting
The Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019, 9AM at the Berkeley Township Recreation Center located on Rt 9. Guest speaker will be Mayor Amato. He will arrive later and speak towards the end of the meeting due to prior commitments on the same day. Closely following the annual meeting, we will have much more to report at a future member meeting as our planning materializes.
Nominations
Nominations are still open for anyone wishing to serve on the executive board. We have not limited the number of members who wish to serve on the board in hopes that we can develop leaders for the future, more familiar with board operations and to give long serving members an opportunity to retire. If you wish to nominate yourself or your time as a volunteer, please advise us on info@berkeleyshores.org.
Memorial Day Celebration/Commemoration
The biggest BSHCA event of the year is on schedule. The boat blessing and Veterans' Commemoration is set and ready to go. The program and instructions for members and guests participating on the water are in the links below this article. We will start with the Blessing at 12 pm and proceed to the Commemoration Ceremony. Afterward, all will assemble on the Amherst Beach for the annual BSHCA Beach Picnic.
Once again, BSHCA will participate in the Mayors Golf Tournament at Cedar Creek Golf Course, set for Thursday, June 6, 2019, 8AM “Shotgun Start.” This annual event raises money for the Summer Concert Series held in Veterans Park. Dear Members,
During the springtime, member Carol Rusnak turns her attention to the Popcorn Park Animal Shelter in Lacey Township. Please see her letter of appeal
Hi All!
Welcome to spring and hopefully some nice warmer weather and spring planting. It’s also the time that we get around to doing some spring cleaning and getting rid of things like old towels, sheets and blankets. Please remember that Popcorn Park Animal Shelter is so grateful that we contribute these things to them. With that in mind, I’ll be happy to pick up and deliver anything you’d like to give to them. Just give me a call!
Thanking you in advance.

Dear Members,
Last year our Annual BSHCA Boat Blessing, Commemoration Ceremony and Beach Picnic was canceled due to poor weather. Let’s hope the weather is with us this year. Our sound system is ready to go. Our participating boats are ready to go. All guests on the water and on shore will hear the complete ceremony consisting of speeches and music.
Please support our association and join us on the water and the beach where we will once again hold the ceremony as close to the beach as water depths allow. For those participating on the water, a full set of instructions will be posted closer to the day and will also appear on the web site.
Plan to join neighbors and members on the beach for the picnic following the ceremony.
Fred Bekiarian, Event Chairperson
April 17, 2019
Dear Members,
In our last communication with you dated April 14, 2019, we reported on the very positive and encouraging meeting held on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the Berkeley Township Recreation Center.
That meeting recruited several new potential members for nomination to the BSHCA executive board along with a substantial list of volunteers to join them in handling the affairs of BSHCA.
On Wednesday, April 17, John Sowakinas, Fred Bekiarian and Bob Nunn met to assess the present organization and to set it on a path of stability for the future. A future that would assure uninterrupted leadership regarding the president and 1st vice president positions (John has placed his name in nomination for the president position and we look forward to his confirmation on June 1, 2019). No longer can we rely on long term members assuming the presidency, sometimes for indefinite periods of time. And for that matter, board positions. The present board runs semi-independent, but the president position is a vital one along with a committed 1st VP ready to take the reins at the appropriate times and to assume the position when the current president retires. In evaluating the role of the association, the declining older member population relies on the early history of BSHCA, but may not be fully appreciated by the more recent resident and member since they were not present at the time. They in turn, must determine the importance of BSHCA based on the past and their own personal experience.
With the present list of nominees, many who are recent to the neighborhood, energized and eager to participate, we have an opportunity to revitalize the association and hopefully, to encourage you to join us. BSHCA has been a mainstay of the neighborhood for 34 years and it must continue as the protector of our environment, but we can no longer rely on a handful of people to manage the affairs of the association for indefinite periods of time. There must be turnover over reasonable periods of time.
Ideas put forth at this initial meeting are as follows:
The board must be more present to the membership
Initiate informal gatherings that would mix business and socializing
Give members more input to decisions at formal business meetings
More effective and frequent communications using new technology
More effective means of recruiting members to action committees. (ie; Center Island beautification)
Break up board responsibilities and tasks to be manageable requiring reasonable amounts of time
Encourage members to join board members as their individual teams for events and duties
Make board positions attractive for future recruitment purposes.
Select subjects with guest speakers that are of interest to the membership. Your suggestions can help in the selection process.
For now, we have given you our thoughts on planning.
We continue to encourage nominations for the board, especially for the position of 1st Vice President.
Contact us on info@berkeleyshores.org.

RECAP of SPECIAL MEETING APRIL 13, Saturday, 9AM
@ Berkeley Recreation Building, Route 9 S.
Dear Members,
We are very pleased to report that the scheduled organizational meeting was very successful and well attended consisting of many new members. If you will recall, our recent newsletters cautioned challenges ahead unless we could encourage more participation from our membership, especially for the recruitment of candidates for board positions to eventually relieve executive board members. The meeting also brought us a substantial list of volunteers to assist directors with board activities and events. We realize some members may have been unable to attend this mornings’ meeting. If you would like to volunteer in any capacity or if you would like to send in a suggestion, please send to info@berkeleyshores.org. The meeting was opened with a presentation of the history of BSHCA, going back to 1985, highlighting the many accomplishments of the organization that positively affected our Berkeley Shores neighborhood. This was done mostly for the edification of those more recent members who may not have experienced actions first hand. For the long-standing members, a synopsis of prior board management styles that relied heavily on the president, suggesting organizational changes in how the day to day operations are managed to be discussed at future board meetings. We look for the new board members to be helpful in this effort.
Very encouraging were the six candidates, who offered their names to be placed into nomination for the June annual meeting. Significant among the six, John Sowakinas, placed his name in nomination for president to replace our current president, Keith Ruscitti, who will remain on the board and act as liaison for school issues. We are still in search for a candidate to place their name for the 1st VP position and next in line for president. We are hopeful a member will step up prior to the June election or soon thereafter. This position is vitally important to assure continuity between the current president and the president elect.
While this letter may be devoid of details at this time, it is written primarily to assure the membership that, as a result of these positive responses from our membership, the board is in very stable condition, encouraged and financially secure, ready for the June annual meeting. Our Memorial Day Celebration, Boat Blessing/Veterans Commemoration and Beach Picnic are on schedule.
Much more will be written in future newsletters on this subject in the future and especially changes to our board organizational structure and assigning of responsibilities.

SPECIAL MEETING SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 13, Saturday, 9AM
@ Berkeley Recreation Building, Route 9 S.
Refreshments will be served.
General members, neighbors are encouraged to attend.
Dear Membership,
Your Homeowners' and Civic Association is approaching a situation that seriously jeopardizes the future of the association. Over the past several years we have asked for additional volunteers to become board directors, officers and volunteers. We are aware the demographics of our neighborhood has changed gradually in the past decade and we are trying to adjust.
The solvency of our association is a serious issue and I cannot stress enough if you appreciate what this association does for Berkeley Shores and the community some people need to step forward, roll up their sleeves and get involved.
It would be a shame to see this association have to dissolve, but that is what will happen if we stay the current course.
The future of BSHCA will be the main topic of the Special Spring Meeting.
Hope to see you in attendance!
Keith Ruscitti, President
Bob Nunn, Second Vice President
BSHCA Executive Board

Dear Members,
In 2018, a BSHCA member was instrumental in bringing the matter of water quality to the Mayor and Township council.
They took action and Aqua is in the process of upgrading its filtration systems.
Please see the below message in reference to Aqua Water Company.

Berkeley Mayor Opposes Aqua Water Company Rate Increase
Mayor Amato will ask Council to Approve Resolution Opposing Increase – Authorizing Attorney to Intervene. BERKELEY – Mayor Carmen F. Amato, Jr., said today that he strongly opposes Aqua Water’s nearly 19% rate increase. “These are difficult economic times for everyone, for Aqua Water to asking for an 18.7% increase is unconscionable.” Mayor Amato said.
Aqua Water provides potable water to approximately 4,000 businesses and residences in the Bayville section of Berkeley Township.
“I will ask the Township Council to approve a resolution opposing the increase and authorizing our attorney to intervene on behalf of the residents to fight against this increase.” Mayor Amato said. “Together with the proposed increase of 18.7% in the base monthly rates, they are also seeking an increase in the usage fee from $5.41 per 1,000 gallons to $6.49 per 1,000 gallons. If these increases were to be approved, the average residential customer that uses 5,000 gallons per month, will see their monthly bill rise approximately $ 11.00 per month or $132.00 a year.” Mayor Amato said.
“Council Vice President Keith Buscio said he would be proud to make the motion on the resolution and Councilman John Bacchione has agreed to second the motion.” Mayor Amato said.
The Township has been critical of Aqua Water’s high concentration of iron in recent years. “After many residents contacted the Mayor and Council regarding the quality of water in 2017, we took the extra step and hired an environmental engineer to conduct independent testing of selected sites in Aqua’s local franchise area.
We promise now, to use any resources at our disposal to vigorously fight these proposed rate increases” Mayor Amato said.
This newsletter will pertain to the important subject of our last mailing to you requesting active involvement, nominations, upcoming events and future planning. The mailing resulted in a positive response from 5 members, 4 with the intention of placing their names in nomination for voting at the Annual Member Meeting in June. Responding Members are Dave Atkins, Yvette Atkins, Donna Lagos and John Sowakinas. Carol Rusnak has volunteered her time for project work. The nominees were invited to attend the last board meeting and subsequent meetings leading up to the June Annual Meeting at which time the membership will cast their votes for all nominations. Those members wishing to place their names in nomination may do so at any time between now and the June meeting. We will not place a cap on the director positions. We are thankful that our mailing to over 700 members will bring new people to the board. Unfortunately, a president has not yet evolved, but we are hopeful.
Our current bylaws spell out qualifications, procedures and time frames to be observed throughout the nominating process. The bylaws were written in 2007 when recruiting was easier. Today, it is much more difficult to recruit for board positions. Lives are busier, making it more difficult to commit and take on additional responsibilities. We wish to bring as many members into active status, positioning them to fill board positions in the future as older members retire. The recruits will be invited to attend all board meetings until installed by the membership in June. This action will require some deviation from the bylaws, anticipating changes to be addressed after the election. If you wish to place your name in nomination, please contact any of the board officers listed above.

Mayor Amato announces Community Outreach Program for Homeowners
BERKELEY - Mayor Carmen F. Amato, Jr., has announced the Township will host another Community Outreach program for homeowners that reside in the maritime area.
"I would like to invite homeowners who have flood insurance to attend the informational seminar, so they can learn how they can better protect their home from a flood disaster, and potentially save money off of their flood insurance." Mayor Amato said.
The Program will be held at Berkeley Township Hall on Thursday March 28, 2019 from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. Discussion will be on flood insurance options, possibility of lowering your insurance premiums, and ensuring that the construction of your new home, or lifting of an existing home will comply on FEMA regulations.
"Back in the fall of 2018, we held a similar seminar which was well received by attendees, so we have scheduled another one, giving residents another opportunity to take advantage of this free review. This will enable residents to sit one-on-one with a Certified Floodplain Manger in order to get flood insurance options on the spot. We encourage maritime residents to join us at this important Community Outreach Program." Mayor Amato said.
Residents who plan on attending the seminar, should bring along a copy of their Elevation Certificate and Flood insurance Policy.
Note: Make sure you advise your insurance agent that you are entitled to a 20% discount on your flood insurance policy through the Community Rating System (CRS). Through the efforts of Township Administration and the Waterways Advisory Commission, we enjoy a CRS of 6.
Future Planning
It is always difficult to discuss future planning because so much is based on speculation and sometimes legal restrictions that disallow action. However, one area that will be explored is a streamlining of our communications processes, taking advantage of current technology. We are frequently disheartened by the poor turnouts at member meetings. We also realize that you will come when our topics are relevant and informative. We will also be seeking out ways to bring our meetings to your home through better utilization of communications technology. In this effort we ask for your input. Please let us know what topics are of interest to you. Tell us of your concerns, living on the waterfront. We can address those subjects in our newsletters and at member meetings by inviting guest speakers who are expert and familiar with the subject matter. We welcome all comments from you, positive and negative on any matters that might affect our quality of life in Berkeley Shores.
If you have not yet sent in your $30 per household dues payment for this cycle, please do so at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely,
Past President, Fred Bekiarian and the Executive Board, BSHCA

Important: Special Notice
Dear Members,
This information is sent to you because several of our members have questioned the origin, validity and purpose of this service. Over the past few weeks, residents in Berkeley Shores have been receiving solicitation letters from neighbors, encouraging them to join an on-line group named; Next Door Berkeley Shores.
This offering was started as a national web site that localizes itself to a specific neighborhood. It has absolutely no affiliation with the Berkeley Shores Homeowners' Civic Association (BSHCA).
It is simply a means for neighbors to stay in touch with each other to share information, similar to Facebook. The BSHCA Exec. Board is unfamiliar with its workings and does not endorse it for our BSHCA members.
BSHCA has served Berkeley Shores for 34 years as an active civic organization dedicated to our quality of life in this waterfront community.
We are currently in the 2018-2019 member renewal cycle. If you have not yet renewed your membership, please do so as soon as possible.
