Police Setup Speed Radar On Bayview

Responding to a couple of traffic incidents and several complaints by Berkeley Shores residents who live in the vicinity of Bayview Avenue, local police have posted a speed radar sign on the road last week.

Berkeley Township Police Chief Karin DiMichele made the announcement at the Berkeley Shores Homeowners' Civic Association's Fall members meeting on October 16. The speed limit on that road is 25 miles per hour.

Chief DiMichele said locals should take the posting of the radar as "the warning" for motorists to observe the speed limit and that Berkeley police will then transition into a "zero tolerance" policy with regards to speeding on Bayview Avenue.

In addition, a few BSHCA members have inquired about the"Megan's Law" registry. Chief DiMichele said information all people who are registered can be found at the New Jersey State Police website (www.njsp.org}.

Overall there were more than 60 people in attendance at the meeting, which was held at the Berkeley Township Recreation Building. Mayor Carmen Amato was the featured speaker and he provided those in attendance with comprehensive informational folders, featuring important contact numbers, community project updates and township news bulletins.

Mayor Amato said the folders are available to locals who weren't able to attend the meeting. They can be picked up at the Township Municipal Buidling for those who are interested.

BSHCA would like to thank Mayor Amato, Chief DiMichele and the rest of the municipal officials and leaders who made themselves available for the meeting.

A special thanks to Jerry and JoAnne Coppola for overseeing the refreshments. Another outstanding job performed by them.

Other News: A reminder WATERWAYS COMMISSION Meetings are held on the First Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. at the Township Municipal Building. The meetings are open to the public.

Beach badges for the 2019 season are now on sale at the Recreation Buidling for $35.

Our next BSHCA Members Meeting is tentatively scheduled for April. We will try to arrange for a guest speaker to feature at that meeting.

Berkeley Shores is also looking for new volunteers who would like to join our Executive Board. Please contact us if interested @ info@berkeleyshores.org

Annual membership dues are still only $30. Ken and Fred are in charge of that department.

AQUA Water Update

It appears from the most recent report, the Iron levels in our tap water have been stabilized for the first time since 2015. The levels still range mostly above the level recommended by the state Department of Environmental Protection, but it has come down since residents and the township have made this a priority issue almost one year ago.
However, a caveat to the report is that the MCL limit has been raised since AQUA is finally, aggressively trying to sequester the iron from our water. Here is the noted citation:

As Aqua utilizes sequestering treatment for Iron, the MCL for iron is raised to 0.6 mg/l. Iron is sequestered with the approval of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The recommended upper limit for iron is based on unpleasant taste of the water and staining of laundry.

It should also be noted the Aluminum levels in our water are still, by and large, much higher than they should be. Aluminum effects the taste and odor of water.

The complete AQUA report can be downloaded here:

The $70 ticket includes a modified open bar, dinner, dessert and appetizers. More information about the dinner and other social events can be found at our website, www.berkeleyshores.org. Board and New Member Recruitment
The overall strength of our organization is dependent upon the size and commitment of our membership. The number of volunteers able to offer their help is the most important element in our continued success. BSHCA is looking for members who would like to be a part of the Executive Board. Our updated brochure contains an application form requesting all necessary information needed to join BSHCA
Reach out to me or any of the current Board Officers listed at the top of this newsletter.

Remember, the larger the membership, the stronger the voice.

2018-2019 Membership Renewal Drive
The mailing for the 2018-2019 dues renewal cycle was completed mid July. The board thanks those members who sent in their dues early, reducing our mailing costs. In the mailing, members received a letter from President Keith Ruscitti, the Emergency Preparedness Pamphlet prepared by the Berkeley Township Waterways Advisory Commission, notice of an upcoming township meeting to discuss your elevation certificate relative to flood insurance and a self-addressed return envelope for your dues remittance.

New Initiatives
Just a word on some new initiatives, the BSHCA executive committee is looking to invest in over the upcoming months.
We are looking to partner with the H&M Potter School to recognize the school's Honor Roll Students.
BSHCA is planning on being a regular sponsor of the Berkeley Little League and its programs.
BSHCA will increase its annual donations to the Bayville VFW, focusing more money on active duty personnel.
BSHCA is planning on erecting a new flagpole and platform for the Amherst Beach.

Center Island Gateway to Berkeley Shores
BSHCA will continue to maintain the Veeder Avenue Island. John Schnitzer is spearheading that effort for the present, but he has requested that he be relieved of the duty and encourages a member to consider taking on the responsibility of maintaining the island.
BSHCA is currently reviewing estimates for landscaping work that needs to be addressed on that island. The landscaping and repairs are necessary because in April of this year, an Ocean County vehicle crashed into the median causing landscaping damage to pilings, ropes and vegetation. The incident occurred at 4:35 a.m., according to Berkeley Township police and required a tow-truck to remove the vehicle.
The county government has not repaired, replaced or claimed responsibility for this accident, thus, we are responsible for repairing the island damage.
We will update members of any updates to this situation.

Upcoming Meetings
The Berkeley Township Waterways Commission (BTWAC) monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday (Sept. 4) at the Berkeley Township Municipal Building at 6:30 p.m.

On September 14, 2018, 6 PM, the township is holding a meeting at the Municipal Bldg., 627 Pinewald-Keswick Road, to give homeowners an opportunity to review their elevation certificates with a Certified Flood Plain Manager. Bring you elevation certificate and flood insurance policy if available.

We are hoping to host a BSHCA Public Meeting at the Berkeley Recreational Center on Route 9 in early October. The focus of the meeting will be property tax policy and tax appeals. We are trying to get a guest speaker or two for the meeting. We will set a date in the coming days.

HAPPY LABOR DAY.

A Letter from the President

(click here for a printable copy)

Dear BSHCA Member,

It might be hard to believe, but our Association is now 33 years old. As president, I would like to take a few paragraphs to inform members on the status of the Berkeley Shores Homeowners’ Civic Association and plans for the future.

This past year, we finally eclipsed 700 members of our organization and it continues to grow. We are a civic organization consisting of volunteer members with no legal powers of enforcement or authority to act. Yet, since its’ inception, BSHCA has not only brought to the attention of our local authorities, issues we deemed harmful to our waterfront, but has instituted projects and spearheaded ideas that improved the quality of life in our community residents.

The waterfront represents about 15-percent of the total residential properties in Berkeley Township, but we add considerably more than that to the township ratable tax base. In addition, the demographics of our neighborhood continues to change. The community is getting younger with more year-round residents who are focused on a wider range of issues.

So, what role will BSHCA play in helping to address the myriad of issues that are of interest to our residents?

This board remains committed to quality of life issues that will strengthen and protect our environment -- continued open waterways to the bay, projects that will provide protection for our shoreline and support of our Township Waterways Commission. The Township Waterways Commission holds its meeting on the First Tuesday evening of every month at the Municipal Building.

This past year, thanks in large part to the tireless efforts of one of our neighbors, Jason Kangas, BSHCA played a role in advocating for AQUA Water to finally build a filtration system in Bayville. The new water system is scheduled to be completed this Spring. This will hopefully rectify the decades-long deterioration of our local tap water. The water deterioration had apparently gone unnoticed until our activism.

Furthermore, our Association will be more active in focusing on issues involving both of our school districts – Central Regional and Berkeley Township – and in continually supporting the efforts and accomplishments of our younger neighbors.

In the coming months, we plan to host and sponsor a few public meetings featuring speakers of interest to our community. We will notify the public of this information through our website, the Community Message Board as well as in our newsletter.

And don’t forget the social events which BSHCA sponsors and hosts. The next one is our Annual Endless Summer Luau Dance and Dinner which will be held at The Captain’s Inn in Forked River on September 14. The $70 ticket includes a modified open bar, dinner, dessert and appetizers. More information about the dinner and other social events can be found at our website, www.berkeleyshores.org.

The overall strength of our organization is dependent on the size and commitment of our membership. The number of volunteers who are able to offer their help is the most important element in our continued success.

These are the reasons why we charge $30 for an annual membership fee. All executive board members are volunteer but there are minimal expenses needed to run our organization. Additionally, through our membership fees and fundraisers we provide donations for scholarships, toward the Bayville VFW, the local PBA and various community groups.

Our updated brochure contains an application form requesting all necessary information needed to join BSHCA. Brochure and applications can be found on our membership page of our BSHCA website. http://berkeleyshores.org/membership.html

The larger the membership, the stronger the voice.

Thank you,

Keith Ruscitti, President,
Executive Board of BSHCA

Neighborhood Roads, Center Island Cleaned Up

Participating in the state's Adopt-A-Highway program, The Berkeley Shores Homeowners' Civic Association sponsored a cleanup of the neighborhood this past weekend.
BSHCA volunteers and crews from the Township’s Public Works Department collected trash along Veeder Lane, Bayview Avenue and Allen Road on Saturday, June 28. BSHCA thanks volunteers, Environmental Chairman Charles Crunkleton, Gary and Ellen Dinallo, Fred Bekiarian, Keith Ruscitti, Tommy Ruscitti, Howard Hoffman, Cathy Mundry, John Schnitzer.

In addition, Center Island Chairman John Schnitzer organized a cleanup of the Center Island display and its surrounding lot on June 26th. The Center Island is at the corner of Ocean Gate Boulevard and Veeder Lane. BSHCA thanks volunteers, John, Charles Crunkleton, Fred Bekiarian, Vic Roth, Joan Nowicky and Gene Lisnay. During the two cleanups, volunteers collected more than 20 trash bags of debris, trash and junk. Thank you to all you who participated in these two efforts. BSHCA is committed to keeping the neighborhood clean.

We will be notifying the community of future cleanups and would hope for more volunteers. The more volunteers, the less time is needed.
John is now planning a routine maintenance program to prevent the island from getting back to its previous state of overgrowth. John needs four volunteers to each take one week per month to police the island. The work, which can be accomplished in a few hours per week, would simply consist of removal of debris and weeds if present. Please contact John Schnitzer (treasurer@berkeleyshores.org) with the week of the month you will be responsible for. If you volunteer to a participate week, and something comes up, John will fill in. The next big task, which will happen this fall, will be replanting. More details will follow, after he plan is worked out with Applegate Nursery.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to Nick and his entire family on this sad news.

No Wake Means Slow Down

Several complaints have been raised recently about the speed and carelessness of some boaters operating in the lagoon areas. NO WAKE signs are prominently posted throughout the channels and the lagoons.
For everyone’s safety and enjoyment, boaters please watch your speeds before heading out into the bay. Jet skiers are also required to observe the NO WAKE laws as well.
Furthermore, Mayor Amato emphasized at our annual members meeting in June, that the township will up its police patrol presence in the Berkeley Shores lagoon areas this summer. Let’s respect our neighbors, the neighborhood and fellow boaters.

Feedback Appreciated, Needed

The next BSHCA Members Meeting will be held in the Fall at a date-to-be-determined.
The BSHCA Executive Board is looking for suggestions on a topic or topics that you would like to be featured at that Fall meeting.

In addition, Mayor Amato has offered to give another update on issues involving Berkeley Shores and the township at a future date as well.
We will keep the community updated on future developments.

All three deserving individuals have family in our community. We would like to schedule and sponsor another Town Hall public meeting with Mayor Amato and local administrators in the Fall either at H&M Potter School or the Recreation Building.
Again, we will update the public on such a meeting in the coming weeks.

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Environmental Director, Charles Crunkleton, has set a date for the next cleanup of Veeder Lane, Bayview Ave and Allen Road for Saturday, June 30, 9AM. All will meet at the H&M Potter School parking lot on Veeder Lane. Hope to see you there. We need your help to put a nice face on our waterfront community.

DIRECTORS

The board needs “new blood.” This last member drive has recruited about 100 new members. We are asking that members give serious consideration to joining us, to not only take on some of the responsibilities of the current board members, but more importantly, to learn the inner workings and the business end of the association. Interested members are asked to contact President, Keith Ruscitti on 609 351 2462.
At this time, we need someone with a bit of sales flair to manage the sponsor list of businesses listed in our web site and to grow the list, giving members a reference for services they might need. This revenue is also used for maintaining our web site.

TASK FORCES
Two task forces have been instituted to investigate and propose actions to be considered by the board in two specific areas.
1-President Keith Ruscitti, Past President Fred Bekiarian and Treasurer, John Schnitzer will convene a meeting to seek out topics of interest for presentations at future member meetings. Recent turnout has been low, but we know that topics of interest will bring you to meetings.
2-Past President Fred Bekiarian, Director Ken Gerb and Treasurer, John Schnitzer will convene a meeting to explore philanthropic ideas, and projects and cost considerations for enhancement of our waterfront community.

We welcome your suggestions and ideas for input to both committees.
Enjoy the weather.

Keith Ruscitti

June 6, 2018

Hope everyone is finally ready for some good weather.

It was disappointing the weather didn’t cooperate with the Annual Blessing of the Fleet and Picnic. The organization wants to thank all those who volunteered their time and energy to prepare for this traditional event.

In addition, the police department, township workers and leaders, veterans’ organizations, civic leaders, the Church and our local ShopRite were outstanding partners.

From a glass is half-full perspective, the local beaches and playgrounds are in excellent shape and the weather can only get better as summer approaches (fingers crossed).

The annual membership meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 9 at the Recreation Center on Route 9 South at 9 am. It will be a great time to meet up with some old friends over some coffee.

Two people in the community have reported over the past month suspicious calls they received that sound like the “Can You Hear Me Now’’ scam, which originates from a “732” phone number.
More information about this scam can be found at this link. https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2017/03/calls-asking-can-you-hear-me-now

Registration is still open for the 3rd Annual Berkeley Shores Golf Tournament on July 19th at the Cedar Creek Golf Course. The Best-Ball format costs $85 to signup with plenty of prizes available to be won.
Once again Ken Gerb has done yeomen work organizing the event. For more information you can contact Ken at members@berkeleyshores.org or Jim Benn: jbennecs@aol.com; Phillip Antoine: phantoine@yahoo.com; Pete Vetro: petervetro@comcast.net
Registration forms can be downloaded from our website at http://berkeleyshores.org/golf.html#golfreg.

The Berkeley Shores community is happy to support the TeamTrevor Christmas in July Toy Drive, which benefits children receiving cancer treatment at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
Young Trevor Kwatkoski, - the youngest of four children - was diagnosed over three years ago with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that is most prevalent in teenagers and young adults. Trevor and the Kwatkoski family have lived in Berkeley Shores for more than a decade.

Signs supporting the TeamTrevor will be posted throughout the township over the next few weeks. Specific donation ideas include: Puzzles, Legos, Playdough, Action figures, board games and Xbox games.
Dropoff locations for the toys include: Applegates Garden Center, Bayville Auto Care, Berkeley Little League, Berkeley Recreation Center, Oh What a Bagel, and Sign Up Signs in Beachwood.
Monetary donations to the non-profit organization can be sent to: TeamTrevor Christmas In July, PO Box 64, Bayville, NJ 08721. The organization phone number is 732-853-5155.

The Berkeley Little League complex, specifically Leiter Field, is undergoing improvements this month and that is why there have been more than normal work trucks in the area.
The dugouts and the seating for the big field are going to be upgraded as will some of the surrounding landscaping. Al Leiter has donated some of the proceeds for the field improvements.
Thank you to the league officials, specifically Berkeley Little League President Jon Bentivegna, for keeping the community in the loop.

There has been an increase in Sea Nettles in the Barnegat Bay the past two years. One of our neighbors, Jessica Rizzo is working on an AP project on how to reduce the creatures in the bay.
Jess pointed us to an explainer on Sea Nettles and the environment which can be found at this link https://www.barnegatbaypartnership.org/protect/threats-to-barnegat-bay/jellyfish/sea-nettles/

A report conducted by an environmental firm hired by Berkeley Township to study our AQUA WATER supply has been released. A copy of the extensive report will be made available at our website, www.berkeleyshores.org or at Jason Kangas’ Facebook page, Bayville Water.

In one month, our neighbors to the north – Ocean Gate Borough – will be celebrating their 100th Anniversary with a Boat Parade & Barbecue. The event will take place on July 7th at the Ocean Gate Yacht Club.

Hello Neighbors,

Memorial Day Weekend

This Sunday (5/27) is our Annual Blessing of the Fleet, Memorial Day Commemoration and Picnic.

The Blessing will take place just off Amherst Beach, commencing at 11:30 a.m. Boaters will line up behind the lead boat, MY IRENE, heading out into the bay. Participants should Monitor Marine Channel 69 for instructions.

The picnic will follow the proceedings on the beach.

There is a caveat this year, however, recent weather reports for the day are not optimistic. Thunder and lightning storms are being forecast for Saturday thru Sunday. Chance of precipatation for our area, according to the National Weather Service, is between 90 to 100%.
If that does occur, we might be forced to cancel Sunday’s event.
If we are forced to CANCEL, we will make the announcement prior to 7 a.m. on Sunday morning thru a group e-mail and on our website, www.berkeleyshores.org.
More information on community happenings can also be found at the Website.
Furthermore, I will try to post something on the Berkeley Patch and promote the announcement on WOBM-AM (1160) or WOBM 92.7 FM.

Stay tuned and, of course, we hope the storm makes an easterly shift in the next 24 hours.

Thanks to BSHCA member, Jay Quinones, for the use of his boat, FINALLY, on such short notice in time for our Memorial Day Commemoration to Veterans on the water. Jays’ boat will accommodate our local dignitaries. Thank you, Jay. Members and guests joining us on the water;

May 7, 2018

Hello neighbors,

Circle the date of Saturday, May 19 as that is when Berkeley Shores Homeowners Civic Association will host it’s Spring Cleanup in preparation for the summer season.

The Association’s environmental director Chuck Crunkleton is spearheading the operation. The purpose is to clean debris that has gathered over the winter months along our local roads.

The streets that will be the focus of the cleanup are: Veeder Lane, Bayview Avenue and Allen Road.

We will meet at the H&M Potter School parking lot at 9 a.m. on that morning. Volunteers are needed. Youth, school and community groups are encouraged to help in the cleanup.

BSHCA applied for a Clean Community Grant to help finance the effort.

Call or text Keith Ruscitti (609)351-2462 or contact Chuck for information..

Cedar Creek Golf Club Privatized

The township has decided to lease out the operations of Cedar Creek Golf Club to Atlantic Golf Management of Farmingdale - a private company - beginning this year. The township made it official at its March council meeting.

Cedar Creek Golf Club was one of the few municipal courses in region, prior to the township’s action.

Business Administrator John Camera said the rates won’t be affected this season and all contracts will be honored. Future rate hikes will have to come before Township Council.

There were five companies that bid on the operation with the Atlantic Golf Management entering the best bid. It is a five-year lease with the Township having the right to opt out at the expiration of the contract.

Mayor Amato said number of rounds played at the course dipped nearly 50-percent since 2008, when the course hosted over 36,000 rounds.

Berkeley Island Park Set To ReOpen

For the first time in 66 months, the area’s most popular County Park is nearing completion, according to Council President Jim Byrnes. Councilman Byrnes said Berkeley Island County Park, which has been shuttered since Superstorm Sandy, might be ready to open prior to Memorial Day at the April council meeting.

Berkeley Island County Park was considered the most popular park by Ocean County officials prior to the storm.

County leaders have given a laundry list of reasons why the park took so long to rebuild (frankly, a list too long for this newsletter) but hundreds of people in the Bayville and surrounding communities are anticipating its re-opening.

Environmental Report on Tap Water

Mayor Amato announced the environmental report on our community’s tap water – supplied by AQUA – has been completed by the company hired by the Township to examine it. More information about the results of the environmental study will be released at the May 21 council meeting.

We will update the information in our next newsletter.

Complaints about the tap water or to schedule a testing call AQUA Water at 877-987-2782.

Water Treatment Plant Gets OK from State to Start Construction

Dear Members,

The state's Department of Environmental Protection officially approved a construction permit for the building of AQUA's new water treatment facility in the Township.
The permit, which was issued on April 3, covers the construction of a new well pump, three Greens and Plus vertical pressure filters, two backwash recycle pumps and two sludge disposal pumps.
The equipment will be housed in a new 1,260 square foot facility located at Locker Street and Gladney Avenue.
AQUA officials have stated Its new treatment center and facility will be operational by 2019.
Furthermore, AQUA's application for Bulk variance and Use variance approval was heard by a special hearing of the Township's Board of Adjustment on March 28.
For more than a decade, AQUA-treated tap water in our community has had a higher-than-normal level of Iron and Aluminum in its system.
This is part of the company's effort to rectify the long-standing problem by building a treatment center for the water.
For a refresher on the AQUA water situation, check out the links at http://berkeleyshores.org/news6a.html#february17 or Jason Kangas' Bayville Water Facebook Page.
Residents can also review the Board of Adjustment paperwork or the state DEP Construction Permit at the Township Municipal Building.

Scam Alert

A heads up for everyone regarding the latest in Visa fraud. This one is slick, since the scammers provide YOU with all the information, except the one piece they want.
The scam works like this:
Person calling says – “This is (name) and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My Badge number is 12460. They continue. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank). Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a marketing company based in Arizona? When you say 'No', the caller continues with, “Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching, and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address). Is that correct?' You say “yes.”
The caller continues – “I will be starting a Fraud Investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1- 800 number listed on the back of your card (1-800-VISA) and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6-digit number. “Do you need me to read it again?”
Here's the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works. The caller then says, “I need to verify you are in possession of your card.”
He'll ask you to turn your card over and look for some numbers. There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the last 3 are the Security Numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the last 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he'll say, “That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?”
After you say no, the caller then thanks you and states, “Don't hesitate to call back if you do” and hangs up. You say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the card number. Upon calling VISA Security, immediately following the scam call, it was discovered that the card was charged in the amount of $497.99. What the Scammer wants is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card. Don't give it to them. Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or Master Card directly for verification of their conversation.
The real VISA will never ask for anything on the card, as they already know the information, since they issued the card! If you give the Scammer your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you're receiving a credit. However, by the time you get your statement you'll see charges for purchases you didn't make, and by then it's almost too late and/or more difficult to file a fraud report.
Credit card companies will never ask for anything on your card. They will simply ask you to verify a purchase. They don’t need other information. They already have it because they issued the card. The PIN number is the key.
Never give out information over the phone unless you make the call and/or are dealing with people you know

Message from the President, Keith Ruscitti

Dear Berkeley Shore Members,

FLOOD INSURANCE PREMIUMS TO KICK IN APRIL 1

On February 21, BSHCA 2nd Vice President Bob Nunn attended a Realtor conference dealing with important real estate issues of today. One of the topics discussed was flood insurance. Keynote speaker J. Michael Hill, of the John Hill Insurance Agency in Bayville, spoke about some of the key points homeowners might be facing in the future.
Highlights of Hill’s presentation include:
· Premiums will be going up, especially for policies without an Elevation Certificate. If the dwelling is a non-principle residence --Pre-Flood Insurance Rate Map properties (i.e. Pre-FIRM or older homes) – will see a rate increase between 5 to 25%.
· Post FIRM homes (new homes) with an Elevation Certificate in AE flood zone are only looking at a 1-percent increase.
· It appears that adoption of the new FEMA maps, reclassifying many flood zone areas, will be delayed. There are some legal challenges to the proposed FEMA changes resulting in major litigation on the issue. At this time, the proposed FEMA Maps designating the new flood zone areas, have been removed from their web site.
· There are also some changes to the interpretation of how one classifies a principle residence. It appears that there are some options to be considered that could save on premium costs. You are encouraged to discuss details with your insurance professional and your accountant for tax purposes under the new federal tax program
Below is the updated Flood Insurance Premium Rate Increase Chart.

SCAM ALERT

Just a heads up that there is a scam going around involving the new Medicare Cards coming out in April. Medicare will never call you on the phone. All communication is done by U.S. Mail. New Medicare cards will be sent out from April 2018 to April 2019. Medicare has also warned on scams. They do not charge for cards or want your personal information over the phone. DO NOT give out any information over the phone.
Medicare Cards without Social Security Numbers Coming.
Example of the new Medicare cards

medicare card example

What’s the SCAM?

Somebody from "MEDICARE " will call to advise you that you will be getting a new Medicare card. But until it comes you will need a temporary card. Fee for the card is between $5-50 dollars. They want personal information, bank account or credit card so they can process your temporary card.

Here's what you need to know to protect yourself, family and friends, throughout the US.

Starting 4/1/18 Medicare will start a year-long project to replace all current Medicare cards for beneficiaries to convert to alphanumeric ID numbers. Currently, the ID number is your social security number. The new Medicare card will come to you in the mail. You don't need to request it or do anything. It will show up.
What you should know: Medicare will never call you unless you ask them to. They do all communications by U.S. Mail unless you ask them to call. Take precautions to protect yourself against identity theft.

AQUA WATER UPDATES

AQUA began implementation of a water testing system at the H&M Potter and Bayville schools in February, not a filtration system as I wrote.
I apologize for the mistake.

On February 27, 2018 AQUA AMERICA released its earnings report for 2017. You can view the press release on the report here. https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20180227006391/en/Aqua-America-Reports-earnings-2017-Announces-2018

Of note to OUR community, is that AQUA is doing well financially and is continuing to expand both nationally and in New Jersey. However, despite that expansion (approximately 1% nationally and in the state), to go along with its documented rate and surcharge increases in 2017, AQUA spent $287.2 million on Operations and Maintenance expenses, compared to $304.9 million in 2016. That means a DECREASE of $17.7 million in basic maintenance expenses.

Furthermore, AQUA currently has rate proceedings pending in Illinois, New Jersey and Virginia of $15.8 million in 2018. I don’t believe Berkeley Township is involved in any of these rate-hike petitions, but we will keep you posted.
Here is a link to the communities served by AQUA in New Jersey and its related water testing results. www.aquaamerica.com

BERKELEY ISLAND COUNTY PARK SPRING TIME OPENING IN JEOPARDY

It has now been 65 months since the public has had full access to Berkeley Island County Park. As everyone knows, the park was destroyed as the result of Superstorm Sandy.

The Board of Chosen Freeholders have provided park regulars with plenty of hope over the years as to when the facility will be repaired, and it looks like a Spring 2018 unveiling is now a tenuous event. At its February 21 public meeting, Freeholder John Bartlett said the Board didn’t have a date, or even a specific week, the county was focused on for the park’s re-opening.

In a follow-up e-mail to me on February 26, Ocean County Parks & Recreation Director Michael Mangum generously provided further details on the project and its status. Mr. Mangum still holds out hope for a late spring opening. “The contractor is making their best effort to complete the bulk of the work by the beginning of May,” wrote Mr. Mangum in the e-mail.

The original plan was for Eagle Construction to finish its part of the project by April. There are several reasons for these delays, Mr. Mangum explained. “That date is based on no significant weather delays. This winter we already stopped site work because of the very cold weather and the deep frost in the ground. Every time there is a nor-easter, site work stops,’’ wrote Mr. Mangum in the e-mail.
“Last winter we had three nor-easters that flooded the Island. After the Hurricane, the County re-built the fishing pier, the pier was again largely destroyed by another storm after the plans and bid specs were completed.” “Therefore, instead of slowing this process down and delaying the bid this had to be addressed by change order during the construction process. This was not addressed in the original schedule in the bid,'' Mr. Mangum continued.

“We are sitting on a low-lying Island in the middle of the Bay and it is likely there will be more storms that could impact the completion of this project,” wrote Mr. Mangum, in the e-mail which was sent prior to our most recent nor'easter.
BSCHA will continue to follow this story and update you as new information becomes available.

Til next time,

Keith Ruscitti, President, Berkeley Shores Homeowners’ Civic Association

Good Day Members,

There is some new information to pass along about AQUA water.
This week Berkeley Township Superintendent of Schools, James Roselli said that AQUA has begun this week to build a filtration system at the H & M Potter School and Bayville School to try and rid the high amount of Iron, Aluminum and other so-called "secondary" pollutants in its water. Previously, the school district set-up its own filtering system for the two schools - at its own expense - to try and rectify the situation. This is a positive development for the school district and the students and workers there.

The Township doesn't need more volunteers for its random testing of water program. The environmental engineering company hired by the township will organize and conduct the random testing.
We thank our township officials, Mayor and Council, for their positive response to this matter, brought forth by BSHCA member, Jason Kangas.
Jason has started a Facebook page called Bayville Water to chronicle and update the water situation in the community. News12 New Jersey was in town on Tuesday to do a story on the water. Variations of Tony Caputo's report was televised throughout the day on the cable channel. The entire report can be found at Jason's Bayville Water Facebook page.
BSCHA will continue to post updates on this issue and other important local items at our website, berkeleyshores.org

Thank You To CRHS JROTC
The BSCHA Executive Board and its members would like to publicly thank the Central Regional High School JROTC for the plaque it sent our community as a thank you for being a sponsor and supporter of the organization's trip to Hawaii this past spring as part of the "Welcome Home Vietnam War 50 Years" event. The group is led by Senior Army Instructor Lieutenant Colonel Michael Tier and Master Sergeant Sherlock Grant and had to raise $75,000 for the trip. About 30 people from the high school were a part of that event. The photo plaque from the JROTC will be hung at the Berkeley Township Recreation Building as Mayor Amato has allowed BSCHA to display the plaque there.

Congratulations

News12 New Jersey recently produced a well-deserved feature story on Lloyd Mullikin and his tireless work on behalf of military personnel and veterans. Lloyd is a longtime leader at Bayville VFW Post 9503 and has been collecting and sending hundreds of boxes of personal items to active duty soldiers around the world. All items are donated, but Lloyd spends thousands of dollars of his own to ship the items. BSCHA has a longtime relationship with the local VFW and donated $500 in cell phone cards this past year. Members wishing to donate to the VFW Troop Mailing Fund directly, may send their checks or donation to:
Troop Mailing Fund, VFW Post 9503, 383 Veterans Boulevard, Bayville NJ 08721.

New Field

The township is moving ahead to install a new turf field at the Sam Pepe Stadium in the Veterans Park Complex. The new all-purpose field will benefit the local lacrosse, football and soccer programs. This will also allow Central Regional High School to host some of its athletic competitions there. A Green Acres grant of $750,000 will cover most of the estimated $800,000 price tag, announced by Mayor Amato the January council meeting. The field is expected to be completed this Fall.

Traffic Alerts

Crews will be working on Bayview Avenue beginning Feb. 19 as part of the work on a gas line being installed from the mainland to South Seaside Park. Expect the road to be closed for a short period heading toward Ocean Gate.
Also, a reminder that on Saturday, February 24 Seaside Heights will be hosting its 25th Annual Polar Plunge which benefits the Special Olympics. If you are participating or attending the event, be prepared for massive traffic delays entering the barrier island after 8 a.m. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the event itself starts at 1 p.m. The Mathis Bridge is currently under construction. For the day, Toms River and the Seasides will resemble Manhattan, resulting in traffic congestion on Route 9 in our area. Plan accordingly and seek alternative routes to your destination, if need be.

Dues Reminder

The annual dues this year for BSCHA members is still only $30 per household. We remain at a 97% renewal rate. The dues help pay for community events such as our annual Memorial Day Commemoration to Veterans, Blessing of the Fleet and beach picnic, the community yard sale, center island maintenance, cleanups, etc. In addition, BSCHA supports other non-profit apolitical local causes, including {3} $750 Scholarships which we offer to graduating seniors, support of the annual Mayor and Police Golf Tournaments and Food Drives. All executive members BSCHA are volunteers.

February 14, 2018 - Special Announcement FYI

Dear Members,

I am sure all are aware of the recent activity taking place on Bayview Avenue. Large pieces of equipment line the shoreline at the old abandoned Beckers” Marinas sight next to the Waters’ Edge Restaurant. We are providing basics of the project provided by Berkeley Township Police Dept. The project officially started on February 5, 2018 with set up on both sides of the drill project (Berkeley and Seaside Park). The road closure date is February 19, 2018, this upcoming Monday. We do not expect the road closure to last more than a couple of days. Traffic north of Waters Edge Restaurant will be detoured through Ocean Gate and around Ocean Gate Dr. to Veeder Lane. Traffic flow to Bayview Avenue from Veeder Lane to Bowsprit will not be interrupted. During the closure, Bowsprit will not be accessible from Ocean Gate to the north.

Project details are limited to the following:

A 12 inch diameter gas pipeline will be installed from a point close to the Becker property and will extend across the bay to the Yacht Club at So. Seaside Park, approximately 9000 feet. Drilling depth for the pipeline will reach depths of 80 feet below the bay bottom. A connection will be made at some point along Bayview avenue.

Report on Water Quality from President, Keith Ruscitti

At the December Berkeley Township Mayor/Council Meeting, more information was provided to the public regarding the quality of tap water provided by AQUA -- one of the 5 water companies that serve Berkeley Township. All of the residents and properties in the Berkeley Shores community are serviced by AQUA. Three representatives from AQUA were at the meeting to answer questions about the higher-than-normal levels of Aluminum and Iron found in our water supply.

To review: Dating back to 2010 AQUA’s own testing found that the amount of Iron and Aluminum in our water ranged as high as 12 times over the EPA RECOMMENDED contaminant level. This is according to AQUA’s most recent tests.

However, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency, the federal agency that oversees water quality) doesn’t consider Iron and Aluminum a PRIMARY contaminant and it doesn’t require states to mandate the amount of such SECONDARY pollutants in its water. States have the option to mandate the level if they so choose. The New Jersey DEP only recommends water companies adhere to these levels. Thus, it is NOT state law.

AQUA says the high levels of Aluminum and Iron are not a health risk but it does cause discoloration and it affects the taste of the water. It also causes damage to pipes, bathtubs, toilets, sinks and filters need to be replaced or checked routinely.

According to water company representatives, AQUA has begun building a filtration system to fix this problem. The project was started last month with an anticipated completion date of one year.

We will keep our membership updated on this issue and other water testing issues that may arise. Testing results dating back to 2010 can be found on our website http://berkeleyshores.org/news6a.html
